The UCSD Combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Welcomes Two New Members to the Family!

Jennifer BrewerJennifer Brewer will graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School and earned her undergraduate dual degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and English Literature at UC Berkeley.  She is a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society.  Jennifer’s volunteer work is diverse...  She has worked in free clinics, with animal rescue agencies, and in a special needs aquatic program with children who have cerebral palsy and autism.  In her spare time she enjoys getting outdoors and staying healthy through activities like rock climbing and triathloning, and she has an avid interest in sustainable living in part through gardening and cooking. 

Christine HodgeChristine Hodge will graduate from George Washington University School of Medicine and earned her undergraduate degree from the Mississippi University for Women in Journalism.  Her volunteer experiences include work as a patient care coordinator at GWU Medical Center, clinical work at the Arlington Free Clinic, and a yoga instructor for inner city kids.   She has worked in software sales and development, advertising, and, and as an on-air radio personality.  During off hours she likes building things with her hands, gardening, and the art of good coffee. 

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Jennifer and Christine to the UCSD Combined Family…  Let the wild rumpus begin!

Dr. Chris Searles Named to the Community Health Improvement Partners Board of Directors

The Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP) is a collaboration of San Diego health care systems, hospitals, community clinics, insurers, physicians, universities, community based organizations and the County of San Diego who are dedicated to a common vision. The mission of CHIP is to improve the health of all San Diegans through needs assessment, advocacy, education, and programs best accomplished collectively.

Dr. Searles was recently named to CHIP's board of directors where he will help oversee programs that are vital to the region.  Initiatives include:

Needs Assessment:  This triennial report outlines changes and trends in health issues in San Diego County and provides a basis upon which community health programs and interventions can be targeted, developed, and evaluated.

Access to Care (ATC): The ATC work team corroboratively develops ways to reduce or eliminate barriers to care by addressing issues of the uninsured and increasing competency in health literacy, cultural and linguistic issues, transportation, and care coordination.

Safety Net Connect (SNC): The SNC project is developing a network and application that makes it possible for hospital emergency departments to schedule appointments at, and share information with, community clinics for patients without medical homes.

ICANATWORK: ICANATWORK is a free coalition of local business leaders, CEOs, human resource directors and wellness experts designed to help businesses of all sizes adopt effective wellness strategies. 

Behavioral Health (BHWT): BHWT contributes to the improvement of the mental / behavioral health of the public and the behavioral health services that serve them through augmenting existing and/or developing new programs that strive to make significant, measurable impacts to the community.

Suicide Prevention Action Plan Committee (SPAP_C): On April 1, 2010, the County of San Diego awarded CHIP a grant to form an interagency Suicide Prevention Action Plan Committee (SPAPC) to create and introduce a Mental Health Services Suicide Prevention Action Plan for San Diego County. 

San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative (COI): The COI is a public-private partnership whose mission is to reduce and prevent childhood obesity in San Diego County by creating healthy environments for all children and families through advocacy, education, policy development, and environmental change.

Homeless Count Revised Upward in San Diego... Keeping Docs Who Care for the Underserved Busy.

A recent count of San Diego County's homeless has been revised, and the numbers are even higher than what a preliminary tally had found. The Regional Task Force on the Homeless, which performed a Point-In-Time Count of the homeless population in January, now estimates that the number of homeless has increased 5.9 percent over last year.

Drs. Lamb and Lauzon Poised to Represent the UCSD Combined Program in Balint "Intensives"

Each year the UCSD Combined Family Medicine & Psychiatry Program supports the traditional UCSD Family Medicine program by providing senior combined residents to lead its Balint groups.  This month, Dr. Kristy Lamb will travel to Seattle, Washignton for a 3 day "Balint Intensive" put on by the American Balint Societyand will join current Balint leader Dr. Shayna Davis as a Balint group leader for the combined and family medicine residents in the 2011-2012 academic year.  Also, her colleague Dr. Vanessa Lauzon will be going to the Fall ABS "Intensive" as well.  In this way, the experience of facilitating peer-peer groups of professionals is integrated into the combined training curriculum.  Congratulations to both Drs. Lamb and Lauzon for their commitment to the growth of themselves and their peers...
