Combined "Top Docs" Rock San Diego!

Okay....  So maybe they're not "rocking" so much as delivering amazing patient care and earning the respect of their peers.  Either way, help us congratulate UCSD Combined Program alumni Kathryn Hirst, Rogelio Samorano, Gabriel Rodarte, and Kai Macdonald who were voted among this year's San Diego Magazine's TOP DOCS for 2011.  The voting, which happens each year, is based on votes collected from members of the San Diego County Medical Society.

Another proud day for the UCSD Combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Program!

Congratulations to Dr. Folsom! UCSD Family Medicine Teacher of the Year!

We are all very  proud to announce that  combined program co-director, Dr. David Folsom, was this year's Outstanding Faculty Teacher in Family Medicine at UCSD!  Dr. Folsom was recognized especially for the extra attention he spends teaching the combined residents on Friday afternoons as he runs the Excellent Learning Opportunity (or ELO) after clinic reviewing interesting cases and highlighting important information.  Dr. Folsom's effort was recognized with a plaque that was presented by both outgoing combined chiefs, Drs. Lindeman and Shackelford at the 2011 Family Medicine End of the Year Party.  Way to go Dr. Folsom!

A Transient Doctor for the Homeless

by Randy Dotinga (for Voice of San Diego)

Dr. Chris Searles holds office hours all over town. He's both a family physician and psychiatrist, and he travels in mobile clinics to places where the homeless gather, whether they're in North Park, Pacific Beach or Chula Vista. In the winter, he treats people at San Diego's cold-weather homeless shelter.

Searles is director of clinical outreach at St. Vincent de Paul Village and an associate professor at University of California, San Diego. His job is to gain the trust of homeless people who are often ravaged by physical illness and suffer from crippling mental problems. He might never see them again, or he may serve their needs for years to come.

In an interview, we talked with the Chula Vista High and UCSD graduate about the unique medical needs of the homeless, how he measures success and how he draws fulfillment from his work.
