UCSD Combined Resident Dr. Kristy Lamb Wins Prestigious Teaching Award!

This past weekend, our very own Dr. Kristy Lambwas awarded the prestigious UCSD medical student teaching award from the Department of Psychiatry for her outstanding commitment to quality teaching of medical students in the area of psychiatry.  Dr. Lamb is the very first combined resident to win this award and we are very, very proud of this well deserved recognition.  Wonderful job!

Congratulations to Dr. Vanessa Lauzon.. Our New Combined APA Public Psychiatry Fellow!

The APA recently announced the recipients of the 2010-2012 Public Psychiatry Fellowship and the list includes our very own and well deserving Dr. Vanessa Lauzon! These fellows were selected from among many applicants from across the US and Canada. This fellowship (funded through an educational grant from BMS) will provide experiences that will contribute to the professional development of residents who will play future leadership roles within the public sector psychiatry and heighten awareness of the public psychiatry activities and career opportunities. Since the program's founding in 1980, the fellowship has been awarded to more than 300 outstanding residents. UCSD Combined Program Sends Dr. Melissa Deer to the California Association of Family Physicians (CAFP) Leadership Training Conference 

 

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Melissa Deer who was selected to attend the California Association of Family Physicians (CAFP) Leadership Training Conference where she will mingle with state legislators and learn valuable skills to further her interest in shaping public health policy.  Melissa is the second combined resident to attend this valuable conference and is an example of the importance of training not just combined doctors, but future leaders for change.  Congratulations!

UCSD Combined Program's Shayna Davis Becomes Next Balint Leader

Each year the UCSD Combined Family Medicine & Psychiatry Program supports the traditional UCSD Family Medicine program by providing senior combined residents to lead its Balint groups.  This year, Dr. Shayna Davistravelled to Santa Rosa for a 3 day "Balint Intensive" put on by the American Balint Societyand will join current Balint leader Dr. Kurt Lindemanas a Balint group leader for the combined and family medicine residents in the 2010-2011 academic year.  In this way, the experience of facilitating peer-peer groups of professionals is integrated into the combined training curriculum.  Congratulations to Dr. Davis for her commitment to the growth of her peers...

Welcome to the Family!

Andrea Gallardo earned her undergraduate degree from Santa Clara University and then spent a year with the Americorps VISTA for the Health Trust in San Jose creating culturally appropriate marketing materials for youth relating to health issues.  She will graduate from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in June.   As a medical student she spent a year working in a violence intervention program at the Community Assessment and Treatment Center in Los Angeles, CA..  She served on the program committee for the UCLA School of Medicine Minority Health Conference and is the co-founder of the Coalition of Medical Students Valuing Diversity.  She has been a leader of the Latino Medical Student Association, serving as Co-Chair of her local chapter, and as the Regional Vice President of Alumni Relations.   She has been clinically active in clinics focused on the underserved including the Los Angeles Free Clinic and the Venice Family Cinic.  Obviously we are very proud to introduce Andrea and to bring her into the UCSD Combined Family.  Welcome Andrea!

 

Christian Small earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Maine after which he spent 4 years in Apia, Samoa as part of the United States Peace Corps where he headed the science department at a local secondary school and extended his assignment to secure funds to build a cafeteria and science lab at the school and to become the head science teacher at St. Mary’s College.  He will graduate from John A. Burns School of Medicine in Oahu, Hawaii this June.  In medical school Christian was the clinic manager of Homeless Outreach and Medical Education (HOME), a project to connect those in shelter with clinical services.  He co-founded Outbound Eye Health International and created and executed a mission to deliver eye screening and eye glasses to medically underserved, rural residents in Western Samoa including the coordination of cataract surgery among volunteer specialists.   He was also President of the Global Health Student Interest Group.  We are excited to bring Christian aboard and know that his experience and passion will make him a tremendous part of our program.  Welcome Christian!
