San Diego’s Homeless Population Third in Nation

San Diego has the third largest homeless population among U.S. cities, behind only New York and Los Angeles. Annual survey data also demonstrates that the homeless population in San Diego has grown in recent years. About 25% of that population is chronically homeless. These data confirm what our combined residents and faculty already know from our front-line experience: for the past few years we have been serving more people, with fewer resources. This highlights the need for innovative programs that have been shown to be effective for reducing homelessness, such as supportive housing and housing-first intervention programs.
