San Diego’s Homeless Population Third in Nation

San Diego has the third largest homeless population among U.S. cities, behind only New York and Los Angeles. Annual survey data also demonstrates that the homeless population in San Diego has grown in recent years. About 25% of that population is chronically homeless. These data confirm what our combined residents and faculty already know from our front-line experience: for the past few years we have been serving more people, with fewer resources. This highlights the need for innovative programs that have been shown to be effective for reducing homelessness, such as supportive housing and housing-first intervention programs. Combined residents & faculty lend a hand at the opening of the city's emergency winter shelter

San Diego's emergency winter shelter opened last week in Barrio Logan, close to our St Vincent de Paul Village clinic. The SVdP Mobile Health Clinic, staffed by UCSD Combined residents and faculty, completed health screenings on over 200 people before they entered the shelter. We screened for conditions that could pose public health risks, and provided on-site medical and psychiatric treatment for people requiring medical attention in order to be safely housed at the shelter. Our mobile heath clinic will be on-site at the winter tent every Monday, all winter long, providing ongoing medical & psychiatric care. Our faculty, residents, and Village health staff have been part of this effort every year for over a decade.

Dr. Folsom presents Project 25 successes at Meeting of the Minds

Last week, Dr. David Folsom and others from St. Vincent de Paul Village presented the early results of Project 25 at the Meeting of the Minds conference. Project 25 is a "housing first" model that helps people who are chronically homeless and very high utilizers of the healthcare system. The UCSD Combined program and St. Vincent de Paul Village Family Health Center serve as the medical home and primary physicians for Project 25 clients.

Combined residents partner with NAMI to educate the community about mental health

On the first Thursday of each month, UCSD combined residents Kelley DeLeeuw and Vanessa Lauzon volunteer with our local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Kelley and Vanessa are regular speakers at NAMI San Diego's "Ask the Doctors" event, which gives patients and family members an opportunity to ask questions of a psychiatrist in an informal setting. The group discussions are lively and the topics wide-ranging. The "Ask the Doctors" portion of the meeting has become quite popular, and it has been as much of a learning experience for the doctors as it has for the other participants. Kelley and Vanessa are pictured here at a recent event with Annie Dunlop, NAMI San Diego Development & Events Manager.
