Andrea Gallardo, MD
Andrea Gallardo grew up in Seattle, WA but now calls her hometown San Jose, CA. She earned her BS in Combined Science at Santa Clara University, and her MD at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, in Los Angeles. She took a year off between undergraduate and medical school to work with AmeriCorps VISTA. She worked with a non-profit health organization doing health education and community outreach with promotoras. During medical school, Andrea worked extensively with her local and regional chapters of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) to increase the pipeline of underrepresented minorities in medicine. She chose combined training because of her commitment to the underserved & primary care, her strong belief that mind and body are intimately connected, and the dire need she saw for a combined perspective in underserved communities in particular.
As a resident in a combined training program, Andrea is overwhelmed but excited by the wealth of possibilities for her career from this point forward. During residency, she has been involved with the UCSD Student Run Free clinic, providing psychiatric services and teaching medical students. She is also pursuing the new Integrative Medicine focus via the family medicine residency program. Andrea is very interested in the medical home and providing psychiatry and primary care for those with mental health issues. She hopes to be able to create such a setting in Northern California after graduation. She is also interested in issues facing the Latino community in particular, and is discovering a newfound interest in maternal mental health. Outside of residency, Andrea enjoys ultimate frisbee, painting, gardening, and hanging out with friends while trying out new culinary delights.
